Darren Paul Zdunich, 59, of Kalaheo, Hawaii, passed away at home June 12, 2022.
He was born Jan. 11, 1963, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Frank and Linda (Robison) Zdunich. Darren graduated from Myrtle Point High School in Oregon in 1981, where he was a member of the football team.
He joined the Army, stationed in Fort Carson, Colo., and Germany, before settling in Hawaii in 2008. Darren received medical training, and earned the Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal, Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Expert Badge with M16 Rifle Bar Cluster.
After the service he worked as a nurse for two years and in restaurants as a server, bartender and manager. Darren enjoyed playing golf, kayaking, growing orchids, reading, and loved watching the ocean from his home. He was kind, quiet, and introverted.
He married Heidie Croft in Salt Lake City. They had two children and later divorced.
Darren is survived by his children, Lindsay (Brandon) in Henderson, Nev., and Kyle in Salt Lake City; two granddaughters, Olivia and Harper, both in Henderson; his parents, Frank and Linda Zdunich of Kelso; four brothers, Mark Zdunich (Sally) of Santee, Calif., Kelly Zdunich (Mica Ann) of Longview, Micah Zdunich of Kelso and Nathan Zdunich (Katie) of Vancouver, Wash.; two sisters, his twin Darcie Zdunich of Vancouver, and Amy Zdunich Anderson of Longview; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Christopher Zdunich; and a brother-in-law, Dave Anderson.
A graveside service with military honors is planned for 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12 at Longview Memorial Park. Father Michael Barbarossa will officiate.
